Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and will always remain so and predicted that its next big battle with Haryana would be over river water. Sidhu’s comments came after recent remarks by Haryana leaders demanding completion of the Sutlej-Jamuna Link canal to get a share of the state’s river water from Punjab. They also demanded relocation of 400 Hindi-speaking villages to Haryana.

The Haryana government convened a special session of the assembly here on Tuesday, just days after the Punjab Assembly passed a resolution to immediately transfer Chandigarh to the AAP-ruled state. Chandigarh is the general capital of the Union Territory of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh, which was built on 26 villages in Punjab, was and will remain in Punjab, he tweeted in Hindi.

Kahin Pe Nigahen, Kahin Pe Nishana, Sidhu tweeted that Haryana’s real target is not Chandigarh but river water. Chandigarh is just an excuse, the target is river water in Punjab. Beware, the next big battle is for river water in Punjab, he said.

Sidhu, who lost the recent Punjab Assembly elections from Amritsar East, tagged AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, state chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in his tweets. The SYL canal issue has been a bone of contention between Punjab and Haryana for decades. In the past, Punjab has demanded a revaluation of its share of Ravi-Beas river water when Haryana wanted to complete the SYL canal to get 3.5 million acre-feet (MAF) of water. The Punjab government’s move to bring a resolution in the state assembly came in the wake of the Centre’s announcement that the Central Service Rules would apply to employees in the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
