Bharatiya Janata Party MP Mukesh Rajput from Farrukhabad has again written a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath demanding that the district be renamed Panchal Nagar. The MP made historic mention in his letter in support of his demand.
In his letter, Rajput wrote that his constituency is located between three rivers Ganga, Ramganga and Kali and has a rich cultural history. “In ancient times, this city was known as Panchal region as it was the capital of five kingdoms. Before the establishment of Farrukhabad, this place was also known as Kanpil, Sankisa, Srangirampur and Shamshabad. Princess Draupadi’s Swayambara was held at Kanpil, which was the capital of Drupada, and even King Drupada’s troops camped here.
The Farrukhabad MP further said in his letter that the Mughal ruler Farrukhshiar had changed the name of the place in 1714 to “destroy the Indian cultural heritage”. The MP made a similar demand two years ago.
Meanwhile, before the 2022 state assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2021, Faizabad railway station was renamed Ayodhya Cantt railway station. The request to change the name of Faizabad railway station was initially made by Lalu Singh, a BJP MP from Ayodhya on October 15, 2020. Faizabad railway station was renamed Ayodhya cantonment almost three years later when Faizabad district was renamed Ayodhya.
Earlier, the government had changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj after which the Mughalsarai station was also named after RSS ideologue Deendayal Upadhyay. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have demanded renaming of several more cities, including Aligarh to Harigarh, Agra to Agraban and Azamgarh to Ariamgarh.
