Goa BJP chief Sadananda Shet Tanavade on Monday said a decision on the current vacancy in the state’s three cabinets would be taken “within a month or two”. He was speaking to reporters just minutes after Promod Sawant took over as Goa chief minister, along with eight other BJP MLAs. He was sworn in as a cabinet minister at a function nearby.

Three more ministers will be added to the state cabinet in a month or two, “Tanavade said, but declined to say whether those berths would be filled by non-BJP legislators. In addition to the chief minister, Goa may have 11 more ministers.

In the 40-member state assembly elections held last month, the BJP won 20 seats, less than the general majority in the House. Three independent MLAs and two MLAs from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) have backed the BJP. A group of BJP MLAs recently opposed the inclusion of MGP in the state cabinet.

They said the BJP did not need the support of Deepak Dhavalikar-led political party. Last week, BJP MLA Govinda Gowda said MGP MLAs should not be included in the cabinet as they had contested the assembly elections against the BJP in alliance with the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC).
