The fierce battle for Chandigarh continues as the Haryana government led by Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday decided to convene a special one-day assembly session on Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a hastily convened cabinet meeting, which was held at the CM camp office and was chaired by Khattar. This is seen as a response to the resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly on April 1, demanding Chandigarh, which is also the capital of Haryana.
The Haryana government is not only considering a resolution against Punjab for its resolution on Chandigarh, but is also likely to take up the unresolved Satluj-Jamuna Link (SYL) canal issue. According to sources, the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee will start at 9:30 am and the session will start at 11:00 am.
While the chief minister did not utter a word in condemnation of the Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s proposal, leaders of the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal demanded that a session of the assembly be convened and an all-party meeting be held. .
The AAP state unit, however, chose not to respond to the development of neighboring states.
The Punjab government’s resolution has provoked strong reactions from political parties in Haryana. Khattar said, “Chandigarh is and will be the capital of Haryana and Punjab.” He added, “Both the states have more to talk about besides Chandigarh.”
Opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has even backed Khattar. Hooda said the Punjab resolution was just a “political agenda” of the AAP.
