A senior JD (U) leader and city council vice-president was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Patna’s Danapur area on Monday evening.
The assailants came on a bike and opened fire outside the house of JD-U leader Deepak Kumar Mehta. He was eating dinner and walking outside the house. At least five people were injured in the blast.
The family members rushed him to a private hospital in Raja Bazar area where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
After the killing, JD (U) parliamentary board chairman Upendra Kushwaha immediately rushed to the victim’s home to offer condolences to the family.
Family members of the deceased suspected a local strongman and a legislator of murder.
The deceased contested from the State Lok Samata Party (RLSP) in the 2020 Assembly elections and lost to RJD candidate Ritlal Yadav.
He was very close to Upendra Kushwaha. After the RLSP merged with the JD (U), Mehta joined the JD (U) to support Kushwaha.
Patna police is currently stunned over the matter. The exact cause of death is not yet known.
