Intensifying attacks on the government over sharp rise in fuel prices, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the rise in petrol and diesel prices was unprecedented and demanded its roll back.
Here at Vijay Chowk, leading a protest by Congress MPs on the issue, he said that petrol and diesel prices have risen nine times in the last 10 days and the common man has suffered the most.
Congress MPs from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha carried placards, chanted slogans against the government and staged sit-ins against rising fuel prices. Among those present were Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
“Our demand is that the government should control prices and stop raising petrol and diesel prices,” Gandhi said, adding that the poor and middle class have suffered the most from the rise. “We see that petrol and diesel prices are rising fast. The government is making thousands of crores of rupees from this. Congress is protesting across the country against this increase in petrol and diesel prices. The government has to stop doing this. Make sure the prices do not go up,” he said. Said.
“I said when the election is over, the price of petrol and diesel will go up and I told the people to fill their tanks,” he said. This level of petrol and diesel price hike is unprecedented, he accused the government of stealing money from the poor and handing it over to the industrialists. Congress is also launching week-long nationwide protests against inflation and rising fuel prices. On Thursday, petrol and diesel prices rose by 80 paise per liter, up from Rs 6.40 per liter in the last 10 days.
Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending on local taxes. This is the ninth price increase since the end of a four-and-a-half-month hiatus in rate revision on March 22.
