Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti said on Sunday that he would join the BJP and would likely be the candidate for the upcoming MLC elections from the West Teachers constituency. Horatti, elected MLC seven times in a row since 1980, has ended his relationship with the JD (S).
“… the time has come for (BJP) to join, not sure when … all (BJP) leaders have told me, I have accepted it too … they have not declared candidates for this seat for me,” Horatti said. Speaking to reporters, he said JD (S) leader HD Kumaraswamy also said he had no objection to Horati’s decision.
“I am still the chairman, I will join the BJP before the nomination is submitted, once the election is declared … all the leaders including the Chief Minister (Basavaraj Bomai) and Yeddyurappa (BJP leader) have agreed. Yeddyurappa called me yesterday (Saturday) and said JP Nadda ( The BJP national president) agreed, things are almost final, “he added. Considered one of the oldest MLCs, Horatti was seen as a prominent face of JD (S) from North Karnataka.
He was Minister of State for Education, and was elected Chairman of the Legislative Assembly in February 2021. MLC elections from undergraduate and teacher constituencies are expected in June or July.
