Orissa Assembly Speaker SN Patro on Tuesday termed the behavior of veteran Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati as inappropriate as he lifted a chair in front of the Speaker’s stage after rejecting his notice to discuss alleged irregularities in the mining sector. The party’s chief whip also threw headphones into the house to protest the speaker’s decision.

You are a senior member of the House and this is not appropriate behavior in the legislature, Patro said. The congressional leader demanded an adjournment motion to discuss “mining irregularities,” which the speaker rejected.

He alleged that the mine owners were looting Orissa and demanded action against them. Members of Congress first raised the issue at Zero Hour and again at the post-lunch session. He later walked out. Opposition BJP chief whip Mohan Majhi has claimed that he could see the hand of the Congress leader behind the rejection of the speaker’s notice for talks. He alleged that Congress leaders had joined hands with the government in the alleged scandal.

“I will resign from politics if I can prove that Congress leaders or legislators are involved in mining irregularities,” he said. He alleged that thousands of crores of rupees were being looted and mineral thieves were leaving indiscriminately. Responding to allegations by the Congress and the BJP, government chief whip Pramila Mallick said it was the habit of opposition members to raise allegations of mining irregularities. When they don’t have a problem, they make it. “
